Standing an impressive 130 feet high and 100 feet across the flat top,
Silbury Hill is the largest man-made mound in Europe. Though built by
Stone Age people around 4,500 years ago, it still dominates the landscape.
It contains a quarter of a million cubic meters of chalk, the equivalent
of 35 million basket loads, all carried by hand. Archaeologists are
still trying to uncover its secrets after 200 years of research and
speculation. Why and how was this enigmatic monument built and who had
the power to organize its construction?
