Working quickly without heavy equipment to avoid damage to the artifact, archaeologists organized by Southeastern Archaeological Research excavate a thousand-year-old forty-foot wooden canoe from the sandy shore of an island in Tampa Bay. The native inhabitants of the area had carved this forty-foot vessel from a pine tree and it certainly was big enough to carry people from shore to shore across the bay. After its excavation, the canoe goes into a treatment tank to prepare it for long-term preservation and display.
