Itinerary

September 17 - 27, 2026

A unique tour of the most important and evocative sites of Scottish prehistory. Starting on the Orkney Islands, then on to sites on mainland Scotland, journeying west to Kilmartin Glen before taking the ferry to the Outer Hebrides, traveling up from South Uist to our final destination on the Isle of Lewis.

Day 0 - September 17 (Thursday)

  • Fly in to Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands (individually, not as a group). Take a taxi from the airport terminal to the Ayre Hotel-a ten-minute ride-check in and relax. In the evening we will have dinner at the hotel restaurant (The Orcadian) and talk about what the tour has in store.
  • Hotel: Ayre Hotel & Apartments, Kirkwall

Day 1 - September 18 (Friday)

  • A day exploring the many and varied prehistoric sites on Orkney including The Ring of Brodgar, the third largest stone circle in Britain. The enigmatic stones of Stenness, one of the oldest stone circles in Britain, Barnhouse and the Ring of Bookan, then on to the Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae with its subterranean houses. Along the way, we'll take in a presentation by Nick Card at his site, the Ness of Brodgar, one of the most significant Neolithic sites in Europe.
  • Hotel: Ayre Hotel & Apartments, Kirkwall

Day 2 - September 19 (Saturday)

  • In the morning we visit Maes Howe, one of the most important chambered tombs in Europe. Then on to Cuween Hill, an impressive hilltop chambered tomb that was found to contain the remains of many dogs. In the afternoon we will drive down to South Ronaldsay to visit the renowned Tomb of the Eagles, where the bones of sea eagles were found with the human burials.
  • Hotel: Ayre Hotel & Apartments, Kirkwall

Day 3 - September 20 (Sunday) - Ferry to Mainland

  • Today we take the ferry from Orkney to mainland Scotland and drive to our hotel near Aviemore. On the way we will visit the Grey Cairns of Camster, originally three separate tombs which were adapted over time to become one enormous burial site. Then on to the Hill of Many Staines with its enigmatic rows of stones, and lastly through Inverness to the Clava Cairns, constructed so their passages face towards the winter solstice sunset. We end the day at a boutique hotel within Cairngorms National Park, not far from Inverness.
  • Hotel: The Boat Country Inn, Boat of Garten

Day 4 - September 21 (Monday)

  • From the vicinity of Inverness we drive south to the Scottish Crannog Centre to get a sense of how the Iron Age lake dwellings there would have been used and inhabited. In the afternoon we will visit the nearby Kinnell Stone Circle with its cup-marked stone. The day ends on Scotland's west coast.
  • Hotel: Crinan Hotel, Lochgilphead

Day 5 - September 22 (Tuesday)

  • Exploring the wonderful variety of sites in and around Kilmartin Glen, including Ballymeanoch which is home to imposing standing stones and one of the smallest henges known. Achnabrech and Cairnbaan hold stunning examples of rock art, The Great X, and the burials of Nether Largie and Templewood.
  • Hotel: Crinan Hotel, Lochgilphead

Day 6 - September 23 (Wednesday) - Oban - South Uist Ferry

  • Today we take the ferry from Oban to Lochboisdale on South Uist. It is a long crossing with stunning scenery, taking us through the Sound of Mull, sailing between the islands to the Outer Hebrides.
  • Hotel: Dark Island Hotel, Liniclate, Benbecula

Day 7 September 24 (Thursday)

  • In the morning we will explore a number of prehistoric sites on the isles of South Uist, Benbecula, and North Uist with the help of "Uist Unearthed," an augmented reality app created by a team of archaeologists working in the isles. Using the app, dwellings and other structures appear in three dimensions on any phone or tablet, showing how these sites would have appeared in the landscape. In the afternoon we will visit Barpa Langas, the best preserved Neolithic chambered tomb in the Outer Hebrides. A short drive from here we will see the ruins of the Iron Age Broch, Dun Torcuill. Using the Uist Unearthed app again, the broch appears fully restored in its original form.
  • Hotel: Dark Island Hotel, Liniclate, Benbecula

Day 8 September 25 (Friday) - Ferry to Isle of Harris

  • An early start, driving from Benbecula to catch the morning ferry from Berneray to Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris. Despite the names, Harris and Lewis form a single island, separated by lochs and mountains. Stopping a short while on the Isle of Harris we will visit the standing stone of Clach Mhic Leoid with its stunning views overlooking the sea. From here we will drive to Stornoway for lunch. Then, on our way to the west of the island we will visit the stone circle Callanish 4. The circle sits on top of a small hill with beautiful views across the landscape. Lastly, a short distance north of our hotel we will visit the imposing remains of Dun Carloway Broch. Although in ruins, the surviving structure gives us a real sense of how these structures would have functioned in the past.
  • Hotel: Dunan Hotel, Doune, Isle of Lewis

Day 9 September 26 (Saturday)

  • A day at Callanish itself, a site that cannot be rushed in any way. Many of the intricacies and sophistication of the site remain a mystery but its relationship with the full lunar cycle has become famous around the world. We will have plenty of time to enjoy the brand new visitor center opening in 2026. We will also visit two of the other satellite sites of Callanish, Callanish II and Calanish III, which are just a short walk away.
  • Hotel: Dunan Hotel, Doune, Isle of Lewis

Day 10 September 27 (Sunday)

  • Drive to Stornoway to begin our journeys home and say our goodbyes. Destinations from Stornoway airport include Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness.

About

An Educational Tour Designed for ALI and Led by Standing With Stones Filmmakers Michael Bott and Rupert Soskin!

Our guides for this unique tour of Scottish sites are The Prehistory Guys, Michael Bott and Rupert Soskin, who have served as ALI's guides for our previous megalithic tours in Britain, Ireland and Brittany. Michael and Rupert played a principal role in designing this tour, intended to highlight the most significant and impressive megalithic sites of Scotland.

This ten-day tour crosses northern Scotland, beginning and ending in two of Scotland's principal island groups, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides. The journey begins in Kirkwall, in the Orkneys, where we spend three nights and visit a surprising group of sites comprising the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. The Ring of Brodgar is the third-largest circle henge in Britain, while Skara Brae is Europe's most complete Neolithic village and Maes Howe is one of Britain's most majestic passage graves. Although excavations have ended at one of Europe's most significant Neolithic sites, the Ness of Brodgar in Orkney, our tour includes a presentation at that site by its chief archaeologist, Nick Card.

After a ferry ride to the Scottish mainland on Day 3, our bus wends down the east side of Scotland, along the way visiting chambered cairns, Grey Cairns of Camster and Clava Cairns. We end the day at a boutique hotel within Cairngorms National Park, not far from Inverness. After visiting the Crannog Centre on Day 4 to learn about the ancient and mysterious lake dwellings there, we find ourselves on Scotland's west coast, where we spend Day 5 exploring the wonderful variety of sites in and around Kilmartin Glen, including stunning displays of rock art.

After a long and breathtaking ferry ride on Day 6 to the Outer Hebrides, we zero in on some of the most remote and fascinating sites of our tour, beginning on the isles of South Uist, Benbecula and North Uist. After seeing Barpa Langas, the best preserved Neolithic chambered tomb in the Outer Hebrides, and the ruins of the Iron Age Broch (stone fort), Dun Torcuill, we take another ferry on Day 8 to the Isle of Harris, stopping at sites there on our way to the Isle of Lewis, where we will spend all of Day 9 at the wonderful sites (they cannot be rushed!) and visitor center at Callanish. After a final dinner together at the storied Dunan Hotel on the west coast of Lewis, we make our way the morning of Day 10 to Stornoway Airport and flights back home.
