In this category are links to archaeologically based programs from various organizations. These programs are designed mainly for elementary to high school aged students though some are available for all ages.

Archaeological Programs

 

Organization: State University at Binghamton Community Archaeology Program

Description: Each summer, The Public Archaeology Facility's Community Archaeology Program (CAP) offers a week-long program focused on archaeology for kids entering Grades 5 and 6. The program is taught by professional archaeologists from Public Archaeology Facility at Binghamton University. Students will learn about the science of archaeology through hands-on, interactive classroom projects, laboratory tours, outdoor activities, and visits to a local archaeological site.

Archaeology for Kids Program

 

Organizaton: State University at Binghamton Community Archaeology Program

Description: The Archaeology For Teens program is designed for students entering Grades 7-10.  In addition to facility tours, classroom activities, and fieldwork, students will participate in experimental archaeology, in-depth survey and mapping techniques, and other activities tailored for this age group.

Archaeology for Teens Program

 

Organizaton: State University at Binghamton Community Archaeology Program

Description: Instructor will relate the principals and mechanics of sediment deposition, site dating techniques, the correlation between time and soil levels, and possible site/soil disturbance. In groups of 3-5 people, students will use soil "keys" to match a known date and soil context to soils on the poster. The keys provide a date to apply to different features on the poster. Students will take this information and concepts learned from the discussion to complete the worksheet.

Stratigraphy and the Laws of Superposition

 

Organization: The University of Texas at San Antonio Center for Archaeological Research

Description: This teacher packet provides teachers with tools for teaching their class through archaeology. Inside is vocabulary lists, 4 special lessons(each written by archaeologists who specialize in the subject matter), 15 activity guides, and links to additional resources.
