In 1708 a crucial battle took place in Oudenaarde, in East Flanders, Belgium, during the War of the Spanish Succession. In the surrounding plains, the two most powerful European armies, including over 180,000 soldiers, confronted each other. In 2007 the Ename Center for Public Archaeology and Heritage Presentation started a project using new technology to explore this pre-modern battlefield. The work involves close cooperation among the local Oudenaarde city authorities, the local population, farmers, and leisure archaeologists.
