TAC International Film and Video Festival Koguryo Tombs

Koguryo castle reconstructed          Engraving of snake and turtle

The Koguryo State of 37 BC to AD 668 is considered to be the cradle of Korean civilization, but what do we know about it? Beautiful frescoes painted on burial cairns are examined in this interesting film. They depict extensive trade and cultural exchange with numerous states of eastern Asia. They also portray the bellicose, imperialistic nature of this powerful and expansive empire.

TAC International Film and Video Festival Echo of Water Against Rocks: Remembering Celilo Falls

Fishermen at Celilo Falls              Fishermen at Celilo Falls, close-up

The creation of Dalles Dam on the Columbia River was heralded by some as a symbol of a new era of hydropower, while for local Native Americans it assured the end of a 10,000 year-old way of life. Historical footage and eye-witness personal accounts captured in this documentary portray the effects felt by the local residents. If Celilo Falls was one of the most sacred places in the Pacific Northwest, was it's destruction worth the building of the dam? This film explores the dilemma that we face as a society, is so-called progress worth the devastation of natural and cultural resources?

Ruins of classical Butrint building

This film illustrates the rise, fall and resurrection of ancient Butrint–a Mediterranean city uncovered through the pioneering excavations of archaeologists in Albania. In the process, we get a vivid example of how, by uncovering lost antiquities in this former Soviet-bloc country, archaeology is instrumental in bringing tourism and an economic future to this newly-independent nation.

TAC International Film and Video Festival  The Amphora of Eleusias

The Amphora
Close-up of amphora showing Ulysses blinding cyclops

Homer's Iliad has fascinated humanity for millennia, especially the tales of Odysseus and Cyclops. At Eleusis, west of Athens, a proto-Attic funerary amphora from 650B.C. has been discovered that tells these tales in pictures. This film captures the essence of childhood wonder as the images are shown playfully, combined with a soundtrack of traditional folk music from Crete. What is history and what is myth?
