Grand Canyon National Park, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, is home to a Native American population with thousands of years of history and tradition. The National Park Service has a policy of leaving archaeological sites alone unless they are under threat. The first major excavations there in 40 years began in 2006 on a group of sites that the Colorado River was washing away. The Park Service, the Museum of Northern Arizona and local Native American groups collaborated on this project, which concluded in 2009.
